I just read the books a few weeks ago when I was looking for a Kindle version of Battle Royale (there isn't one), they're actually really good books. Not like Twilight (from what I've seen about them) at all. :p

I'm looking forward to the movie though being a 12 is a bit disappointing as I heard they've made a good few cuts, although some were just digitally toning down gore and stuff to get the rating, but then compared to Battle Royale I'd say that the focus in far more character driven since the books are exclusively from Katniss' POV also the trilogy gets progressively darker too but there's little in the way of major gore.

I heard someone call this, "Twilight for girls who don't hate themselves".

Its twilight like only in that its a love story, and more than a little geared towards girls. The writing in the books is way better than the twilight books. Suzanne Collins is no stephanie meyer, thank god!

Went to watch the film yesterday afternoon, it was pretty decent actually. Certainly worth a watch, even if at no point there are any surprises or shocking plot twists. Everything is obvious, but it actually works for it. I'll certainly be watching the second one.

Theres very little new under the sun. I dont care if its a rip off or not, as long as its decent. :)

Everything's a rip off if you want to think like that though. Battle Royal was A Game of Death, and that in itself was a "rip off" of The Deadliest Game. You can go back forever playing that game. As long as the copying isn't disrespectful theft, or really cynical cashing in, then I think being influenced by something is fine. As long as the concept is, in some way, progressed, or made for a different audience, I don't think that's a rip off. The only kind of film's I think are offensive in their rip-off-ness are horror film re-makes, because they're effectively the exact same film, for the exact same audience, trying to the the exact same thing in the exact same way.

Those that are familar with the books will know that the series expands beyound the intial Battle Royal concept - after all it shouldn't be what an idea is similar to after all, it's how it entertains and expands onwards that is the point.
