The best animation/cartoon films

Watching cartoon is more like a quick snacking session in the afternoon. You can watch it in 15 minutes, laugh a bit, and turn off the TV without any attachment. Growing up I learn more about this kind of movie, especially after a friend introduced me to Japanese animation. Grave of the Fireflies and Spirited Away opened my eyes to what these animations can do. They are as powerful as the usual movies we know.

Which ones are your favorites?

Of course, my favorite was the Lion King. My granddaughter loves Nightmare Before Christmas and calls it "BumBum" because that is the way the music goes. I just started watching some Anime. I like some of it but the music really makes me crazy.

Yeah, when it comes to animated films, my mind always jumps to Disney. (My favorite of which, right now, is The Aristocats and I'm so jazzed it's on Hulu.) I never got into the Anime shows/movies, but I never really gave them a chance either.

What kind of music do you mean? Japanese crafts sure are weird, but the messages are also beautiful.

Until a few years ago, I also only had Disney in my mind when I talked about cartoon or animation. They still make lovely titles (Inside Out is so fun and relatable) and have more under their belt. Now I understand more about the diversity, though. It's a good comparison to see how they are entertaining in completely different ways. For example, the latest hit "Your Name" animation gives a relatable setting to teenagers.

Did any of you watch Rango? That is my all-time favorite animation movie. Zootopia comes close as well. It has been a while since I watched any other. Has anyone watched Boss Baby and if so, how would you recommend it?

My daughter has a "set" of some anime but she likes to watch it when she goes to bed and leaves the music going all night. There is so much of that I can stand. I have to go turn it off. It repeats and repeats until I'm crazy.

That can be quite annoying, especially if she plays it loud in the evening. Maybe you should talk to her about some sleeping rules?

Zootopia is such a gem. So much wit without neglecting the important plot beats and messages. It's also in my list of favorite cartoon movies, although it doesn't beat Big Hero 6 yet.

Zootopia is such a nice film with undertones of important life lessons. I picked a lot from it and anyone who hasn't needs to watch it. I will have to also look for Big Hero 6.

Baymax! That adorable white guy.

It's a must-watch for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. It looks fun and action-packed from the surface but contains good life lessons beneath. The kids will especially love this guy. One of the movies whose sequel I'd love to see so much.

@Luna, I already watched the trailer and it's my official must-watch movie, this Christmas season. The good thing about animations is that the kids too can enjoy watching!

For the most part, I have pretty much outgrown Disney films. In fact, I outgrew Disney before my 10th birthday decades ago. LOL! There is so much animation that exists.

I really enjoy watching animated shorts and Japanese animation. Anime is very broad. There are different genres and sub-genres meant for each targeted age group, gender, sexual orientation, etc. ;)

Western animation usually aims for something cute and fun, memorable and deep, all at once. On the other hand, we can find some really strange anime that may only cater to a very specific demography. My choice usually depends on what kind of content I want to see, although sometimes I find something which completely changes my mood instead. A case in point: 5 cm per second. Has anyone seen this film?

I didn't expect to like Big Hero 6 but I really enjoyed it. The new Trolls movie was actually quite good too. Of course, I only saw them because of my son, but yes they were quite good. Big Hero 6 especially, I really really liked that one.

Otherwise, Toy Story series has been one I always loved and I will watch Toy Story 4 whenever that comes out.

I watched plenty of cartoons and some anime as a younger kid and adult, but I never got super into anime. I did love Dragon Ball Z, watched a bit of Tenchi Muyo, really loved Samurai Champloo and Death Note. I also loved Teen Titans, Static Shock. I still love Family Guy too.

After I watched Big Hero 6 for the first time, I searched for the previous five titles. It was silly; I did not realize it was not a sequel number! It is unfortunate that the TV series can't capture the same magic and it has some differences to the movie's ending. I will wait for an official sequel.

Troll was great. Nice soundtracks though not extraordinary. It reminded me of The Simpsons which I did not like even when I tried.
