Assuming this is from the 5/3/06 NOAH show, this is a great match but the Marufuji vs Taue sprint from the same show is even better.

That's really an amazing carryjob from Taue, very good match.

    Here's an earlier Kenta/Takayama match:

Takayama is just a tough son of a gun. He's long been a favorite of mine; a real wrestlers wrestler if ya will.

I wouldnt call it a Taue carryjob as such (but hey, I never call anything a carryjob), in fact it was definitely one of the best Marufuji performances I've seen. Probably because it beared little relation to his usual matches.

I am in the camp of "Marufuji annoys the sh*t out of me sometimes" but I dont think he's outright worthless and he's done some work even in his style with KENTA, Kanemoto, etc.

I'm in the camp of thinking Marufuji is one of the worst guys in a major(formerly major) company, I think Taue really reigned in his goofier shit in this, which may be down to how limited Taue was at this stage, or that he knows how to structure a match so that spots mean something. Probably the structure thing.

You're talking about the Kanemoto match from 2010? Thought it was a good match(which I caught some shit for on other forums), again mostly down to Maru's opponent. The tree of woe slap spot was awesome and Kanemoto beating people up is always fun. Hate all the KENTA matches, though the one they had for the GHC title is so bad it needs to be seen, comical spectacle. Dude may have the worst moveset in wrestling.

I had a feeling you might be :p

I'm not really a fan of him by any means, but again I dont think he's worthless. Working with Taue I think by necessity "reigned his sh*t in" because he's working with Old Man Taue and not a Juniors match. And it made for a match with less "stuff" in consequence. But I dont think its fair to say Maru didnt bring things to the match or wasnt good in it. Him throwing his overblown Jnrs offense at Taue (and Taue playing off it) was essentially the match.

I'm with you in that I dont particularly like his "usual" Juniors matches. The Devitt matches, for example, are something that I wouldnt say are bad per se, but just completely fail to engage with me in any way. They're just there. But thats on Devitt as much as Maru and generally I'm not really a fan of that sort of play-acting, exhibitionist Jnr style. So my apathy encompasses most of Maru's matches because he's the chief transgressor in that area.

On the other hand, I'm really big on KENTA  Their matches are difficult. If anything they just go too long, because the first halves are pretty boring but the second halves are insanely awesome and I'm enjoying the match by the end of it. But when you're talking 40 minutes or so, its too much to sit through to get to the good stuff, and I'm not sure I would again. Still yet to see the 10/06 match though.

I loved the Kanemoto match. Just loved it. I never thought I would, because by that point I was already tired of Maru matches, but it was great and (to my point) quite unlike a Maru match. There was some real hatred going on, a lot more beating the sh*t out of each other, and as you say the post spot was awesome.

KENTA's matches may drag to start with depending on who he's competing with but there always ten times better than anything in WWE or TNA

You kids have all gotten used to the fast paced world of modern wrestling. Why, back in my day main event matches used to go on for days.

I dig long matches. I can't watch 'em back to back or anything though.

Long matches aren't a problem, some of my favourite matches go 40 minutes and over, it's this:

They have a 40 minutes match with around 30 minutes of total filler, leg work that goes nowhere, apron spots sold as a transition(instead of like death), pointless spot arfter pointless spot etc. Then they go into total overkill, with a really ridiculous amout of near falls and no selling. It's obvious they're trying to emulate AJPW main events but they seem to just look at match time instead of match content. It's not isolated to KENTA/Maru either, it's pretty much across the board in Japan these days. If KENTA stuck to matches up to 15 minutes and Maru went away forever, I'd be cool with them.

This reminds me of people complaining about the avalability of wrestling these days, back in my day I had to give Jeff Lynch a diamond for a third generation VHS which had movements resembling wrestling on there. If you saw a swirl of yellow it was probably Kawada, and you knew you had a classic match in there somewhere.

    Ridiculous exaggeration.

KENTA sometimes falls into the same pitfalls as the bad Junior Heavy play actors (especially when he's in with one of them), but at the same time I think he's miles better than them. He doesnt succumb to that stuff anywhere near as bad, and his pros far outweigh his cons. Plus, he's so awesome at getting the sh*t kicked out of him.
