Are we too divided now politically?

Looking at politics around the world, it sure appears that the left and the right will never be able to reach a compromise to solve whatever problems there are out there. Whatever happened to civility and the courtesy of listening to an opposing viewpoint without being insulting or demeaning?

I think the people who speak the loudest are the ones who are one extreme or the other. I think there are still moderates but they just don't get a big voice because what they say just isn't "sensational" enough. I wish we could go back to the days of civil discourse. I used to love talking about politics but now I feel like no one listens, they just demonise.

That's definitely a big part of the problem.

Another big part is that those loud voices have routinely played up this concept of "us vs them". It appears that this board has people from the UK so I don't know if it's the same way over there or not, but in the USA we have the problem of religious folks being on a mission from God or "standing up for Christian values" and thus being 100% completely unwilling to compromise on anything, because they seem to think it'd be an affront to God if they did.

Basically out here, if you're Republican then people can get carried away automatically assuming you're racist or sexist or homophobic and that you hate poor people. If you're a Liberal, people get carried away and call you a libtard, snowflake, assume you're a socialist who just wants to destroy "OUR AMERICA".

Or with guns, it's a constitutional right to bear arms and so any talk of more comprehensive gun control or methods to curb gun violence are met with hysterical cries of "THEY WANT TO TAKE OUR GUNS", so even though we have a mass shooting every week or so somewhere in the country, nothing ever gets done besides "Thoughts and prayers".

Not to mention corporations out here can infinitely contribute to people's campaigns because it's not public record of who contributes or not. We get little peeks at it every now and again, like some people do manage to keep track of how much money certain politicians have received from the National Rifle Association over the course of their political career for example, but most of the time it's secret. They basically own the government, so that's why you're now seeing all these environmental regulations being eradicated out here, and the attempt to squelch unions to take away worker's rights and power to negotiate for better terms. That's why we may never have full healthcare for everyone because there's too much money to be made through insurance and medical costs and the government doesn't want to pay for it, nor does it want to bring the costs down to a reasonable level like the rest of the civilized developed world, so we're stuck with over half a million people going bankrupt from medical costs every year while places like UK, Canada, most of Europe can't even fathom that.

It's gone the way of the buggy whip. People want to be right, they don't want to have a conversation about it. Debating has been replaced with arguing because in order to debate you need to be well versed in the topic at hand.
